That night it was bitterly cold. A street vendor selling salted-tea eggs saw that our home had been bombed to nothing and that our whole family was there weeping, so he gave us his eggs and refused to take a single coin. In those days of refuge and flight, everything was so hard. Even now I still remember that vendor — he is the one who left the deepest impression in my memory. I am nearly seventy now, and if he is still alive, he must be over a hundred. Our people back then were great .
